[Physics, I think] The speed of light, is it truly a speed?

I'm sure the speed of light has crossed many peoples mind at one time or another, my question is, is the speed of light an actual speed? Here what I base my question on: According to scientists, if you go to the end of the known universe at the speed of light, it is but 25 seconds for you, but for people on earth it totals up to thousands of years. Now, my theory is that the speed of light, starts off as a speed, and the fact that you are going so fast, you tear through space itself and end up at your destination...now this is only a theory and it probably sounds stupid as hell, but anyway, discuss.
